looking for a bilingual immigration lawyer

Ill agree with Ashley here.....I have used them a few times this year and have been dealing with Rafaela (through the office) for the past year.  She has been very attentive with all paperwork and that is something I like.  They are based out of Sao Paulo. I have used them for a few issues  CPRM...my wifes name on her passport changed (We never knew you needed to register our marriage from years ago ALSO in Brazil..who knew?..lol)

@Jughead Jones My experience was absolutely awful and from what I have heard Brazil does not have many Immigration Lawyers. Be Very, Very Careful.

There are not many immigration attorneys in Brazil, as the demand is not as great compared to other countries, eg the USA. However it is much easier to find one local to you, so it is easy and cost-effective to meet in person, so where are you?

I would advise doing internet searches and making inquiries yourself. Where you are should be the easiest place to find one, as it is the largest population center in the country.

@Jughead Jones As mentioned previously, many of the steps should be local. There is an immigration lawyer that I have contacted in the past..".Oli..."(not to get in trouble by giving out the whole name) that operates out of Sao Paolo and has a popular YouTube channel.

When foreign spouses of Brazilian citizens who married abroad apply for a Family Reunion visa -- VITEM XI -- in order to live in Brazil, the Consulate will insist on registering the marriage if it wasn't registered before; the Consular registration of the marriage and the issuance of the Certidão Consular de Registro de Casamento are treated as a preliminary step to the visa process.  On arrival in Brazil, the Certidão Consular is brought to the cartório by the Brazilian spouse and a Brazilian Marriage Certificate is issued, repeating the information on the Certidão.  When the couple comes on the basis of a Retirement visa  -- VITEM XIV -- however, the Certidão Consular isn't necessary for issuing that visa, and may be overlooked.

The impact on the foreign spouse is usually negligible, but the impact on the Brazilian spouse may be more severe, particularly if the marriage ends, either through divorce or death of the foreign spouse.  For a  Brazilian citizen a Marriage Certificate isn't just the recording of a marriage contract; it's an amendment to his/her identity registration, a revision of the Birth Certificate.  Having one's registration out of date isn't a crime, but it can create complications and delays when settling an estate, or any other formal setting in which a person has to provide proof of identity.  So it's a good idea for a Brazilian spouse to update his/her register at the cartório as soon as convenient.  I've never heard that this can be done with an apostilled copy of the foreign Marriage Certificate with a Sworn Translation without having a Certidão Consular, but it would be worth a try.
