Renouncing US Citizenship: State Department Reduces Fee 80%

03/19/26 We have sometimes had questions from US Citizen expats about renouncing their US citizenship, so I'm posting reliable information on this new development here:

Renunciation of citizenship by any expat from any country is a serious and often irrevocable decision, and should never be taken without careful consideration of all the possible ramifications, and based on good advice.  It also will not ordinarily be permitted unless the person renouncing already has a second citizenship, and will not be rendered stateless.
