Welcome, David!   What type of visa are you in Brazil on?  That's the single most important thing that determines your options.

I'm on a student visa trying to get a cheap place to stay as well as be in walking distance to my school. I need it to be cheap because I need my money to last almost a year and it's gonna be tight.

Hi, David.  Please see my post in your other thread for temporary housing.  If you're here on a student visa, your best bet would be to talk to people at your school for suggestions on housing.  They're the ones most likely to recommend places that are legitimate and where you won't be taken advantage of.

I mentioned "República" in the other post; this is certainly something to ask them about.  This is a site to help students connect to Repúblicas.  I can't vouch for it, and only offer it as an example:

Thanks I'll check your other reply.

Again sadly my contact isnt helping much. I still have to set up a meeting with the police and wait 3months for it, so I haven't met anyone. I guess I could take an Uber over there. It just sucks because I'm alone out here.
