Return to Brazil (perm resident): need visa?

UhOhDetran

Hey guys, I think I know the answer to this but I'm not sure. Basically, I have a CRNM card, permanent resident of Brazil, via family reunion. I left Brazil temporarily in January 2025 for work, and now I'm planning on returning before the "two year deadline" (the deadline they stamped in my passport).

I also filed my Saida Definitiva for the RF because during this time I was not a tax resident of Brazil.

Can I just return to Brazil with my CRNM card, or would I need some sort of visa? I think I don't but I'm not sure because I filed the Saida Definitiva. I don't think that has anything to do with residency or the two-year return deadline but as all of you know, Brazil is complicated and I want to make sure there won't be any unusual problems because Brazil has a tendency to trip people up with unusual clauses in the law! haha.

12/09/25 @UhOhDetran.  I think that you're going to be ok.  First, because the PF and the RF don't seem to crosscheck each others' files, a fact that's tripped up more than one naturalized citizen.  Second, because Brazilian citizens who move abroad do what you've done all the time, with no ill effects.

If you're returning to Brazil definitively, just be sure to update your status with the RF at your earliest opportunity.

Thanks so much for the reply! Also, would you know if I would have to make a list of items I bought overseas during this time for customs? Actually, I didn't get too much, but I did replace a few things that were getting old so I'm wondering if I'll have a problem at the border....?

I doubt it.  If you're talking about obviously used personal property that you're carrying with you or in your luggage (e.g., laptop, cellphone, music player, eBook reader, chargers, clothing, toiletries, etc.), nothing like that should be any problem.

Over and above that, you have a US$1000 exemption for anything new that you're bringing on an international flight (reduced to US$500 if you're crossing a land or river border), with special limitations on alcohol and tobacco products, and multiples of any items that you might appear to be bringing in for resale.

I would not go to the trouble of making a list.  If you're bringing in anything new that you're worried won't pass as personal property, you might want to have the receipt with you.  If you can't convince the Customs Officer that it's exempt, their usual practice is to look for a price online to determine the basis for the tax.  If the price they find is lower than what you paid, just go with it; if it's higher, you can show them the receipt.  But again, I doubt this will be necessary.

Okay thanks! I do have some cameras because I'm a photographer, but I've had them for years and even previously brought them into Brazil before when I lived there and I didn't have a problem then either.
