Is This Phishing?

roddiesho

I have to be careful of any phising or other attempt to get my money. I recently with the help of my Brazilian-American daughter finally opened up an Amazon-Brazil account. I made an order and then later went back to the account to see when it would arrive. I received this message....

"Account temporarily suspended
We've noticed unusual payment activity on your account and need to verify who owns the payment method used in your most recent order. (Why?)"

I have never had this message from any retailer etc. which is basically asking me for my banking information. Am I just being paranoid as my daughter would say.

FYI - As a follow-up I contacted PayPal where the funds were coming from, and they told me that

there was no way of confirming to a third party that this was my account WITHOUT revealing account information etc.

Did you receive the message while you were checking your Amazon Brazil account, or in an email message?

Was the message in English?

@roddiesho, whenever I get an email or message like this, I don't even open it and it just goes into the spam and / or is reported as fraud.

If someone really wants me to pay, they would have other ways to reach me other than an email.  And there would be for a purchase that I would recognize rather than a blanket statement.

Re: paypal - if you have this account linked to your bank account, you should be able to get your bank account statement and check that all purchases that you made are correct.  No need to ask paypal for anything.  The only information that paypal can provide is to give information about the charge amount that caused the account to be flagged as suspicious.

This is surely a scam.

PS:  That's why I only use paypal for payments that I make to people / vendors that I know personally.  Those people would contact me if there are payment problems.  For other payments, I use credit cards.

I use a Brazilian credit card with Amazon Brazil, and a US card for Amazon US. Do you have a Brazilian address on your PayPal account?

No, you're being careful and sensible.

I won't even accept incoming calls from my bank. I ask them to give me their name, then I call them back on the bank's UK number.

You can login to your new Amazon Brazil account to see what is going on. Manually enter Amazon.com.br in your browser and verify the URL before you enter your login credentials.

Once you're there, go to "Ajuda" at the bottom of the page.  Until you have the means of payment question resolved, you might want to use "Boleto Bancário" as your means of payment on any new orders.

@alan279 It was a message I received in the Amazon Brazil website when I was following up on another item that I ordered after the first one.

I contacted Amazon.com and asked them if this was possible. The agent said rare, but yes then hung up.

@abthree @alan279 @Pablo888 I am grateful for so many responses, so I apologize if I don`t get to each one personally. Having used Amazon. Com for several years I know they do not charge you until they actually ship. The ETA I believe is the 19th, so they have not shipped yet. The order went through BEFORE I received this message, so I am just waiting to see if I receive it soon. It is possible that this started when I asked my wife`s secretary, who is Brazilian, to place the order since she could understand the directions. This was a day ago and unknown to me she did this on HER Amazon.BR.. account rather than trying to create one for me. The upshot is that you have a purchase attempting to be made on two completely different accounts. Hers and the one I just created (actually it was an Amazon Brazil account from 2022 that I was able to recover.) If this was the cause, I can understand the alarm.

@alan279. The "interruption" was a temporary hold, so I could go nowhere. 😎
