Relocation within Mexico

dhynds2003

Hello,

Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

I have lived in San Cristobal De Las Casas for a couple years with my girl and 3 dogs (one small and 2 that are big).  I'm a big fan of the place (and would be happy to answer any questions anyone had about it), but there is a possibility I am going to be looking to relocate somewhere else in Mexico within the next year.

At this stage, I don't have a vehicle and would prefer to avoid buying one if possible.

So basically, I was hoping to get some suggestions of how to best move here in Mexico or to hear what others have done in similar situations.

Thanks

Well dhynds

there is no getting around a vehicle to move things. What vehicle and rented , hired or purchased would depend on where to and with what. You might check the classified and housing tabs at the top of the page to get ideas.

We reside in San Cristobal (in Centro where a car is not needed) and Ajijic, Jalisco. ( where a car  is far more important than in San Cristobal) Two very different places. San Cristobal for 13 years  and Ajijic for 19 years. We are now considering the possibility of selling Ajijic and, should we do so, we would, perhaps, buy another home in Southern Mexico. I can’t speak for my spouse but I am inclined to seek for a warmer town than San Cristobal (at 2,000 meters) for winter residency. Both SanCristobal and Ajijic are smaller cities and we are not inclined to live in a big city although we would like to be fairly close to one for urban conveniences such as superior shopping opportunities and, even more importantly, as we are in our 70s, availability of top-notch medical care which becomes more important as we age. I have had three medical emergencies in Guadalajara And Chiapas and can attest to the importance of superior medical care by being alive to write this and in decent health for my age. I am thinking the Gulf Coast of Yucatan more-or-less near Merida would be nice for the winter months and San Cristobal for springs and summers.  As for moving, we rented rent-a-trucks to move from San Francisco to Ajijic back in 2001 and to move some stuff from Ajijic to San Cristobal back in 2006. We will probably use that alternative to move out of Ajijic if we sell there wherever in Mexico we buy another residence.  Maybe a beach house on the Yucatan Gulf would be nice and, for Mexican beach properties, beachfront houses can be pretty reasonable to buy or rent there. However, if you move to that area you will need a car-no question. You could get by in Merida or, pehaps Valladolid, Yucatan. without a car if you moved to  areas in those respective cities where that makes sense.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I was trying to find information on cargo truck/van rentals in Mexico, but didn't have much luck searching online.  When you say you used rent-a-trucks do you mean just some random truck rental service (I googled it and didn't find anything;  maybe that was suppose to be obvious, lol).  If you were just referring to generally renting a truck, do you recall what company you used when moving stuff to San Cristobal?

Thanks

Sorry, but no I don’t remember how we rented a truck in the Ajijic  area to move some stuff to San Cristobal as that was some 13 years ago and I have yet to explore options in San Cristobal for The Yucatan but I am  confident I will find vehicle rental companies in a city the size of San Cristobal.upon inquiring about.

OK thanks,

I'm just getting started thinking about this as the earliest we would relocate is in around 8 months.  I'm encouraged you were able to find a cargo rental truck.  I wasn't quite sure if that was a thing in Mexico.  I'll be asking around with some of the locals I know at some point and would be happy to share anything I learn if you would be interested?  Another option I will be considering is finding a truck to rent in Tuxtla as they seem to have a lot more options and the shuttle to San Cristobal is fairly cheap and easy.
