Usually after sentence is completed, immediate deportation is carried out.   If there is a new case, it will be filed while he is in prison and if convicted, sentence will be extended.   They don't release you and allow you to roam around after prison - as I said, immediate deportation..........many times, straight from jail, depending on the crime.

Yes as I said, they won't release him until everything is settled.  There is no way of knowing how long it will take and for that, you need to consult a lawyer.   However to be blunt, it does seem that he committed a crime and this is why it is happening - it is not your fault but it is entirely his.   I would not stress so much for someone who didnt even think about his family before doing something stupid.
