Can anyone suggest where to start?

Hello Liam. I have dual Irish/British Nationality and have been living happily in Brașov, Romania for two years now. I did all my research online, no lawyers required. A good starting point is the gov.uk site. Googling Move from UK to Romania will get you to the right place. If you nake the move, I would advise renting at first. Rent is generally cheaper here than in UK, so, off you are able to rent out your UK home, you should be fine.

Brașov is a beautiful city, I visited a few years ago with me wife and her family and loved it, i am glad you are happy there.

Did you just contact the Romanian consulate about your residency visa?

Also, as you said, the sensible plan would be to rent but have you any experience of trying to get a mortgage or any kind of money lending in Romania?

I have Irish citizenship so getting a residency certificate was really easy. Do you have any Irish relatives that would entitle you to a passport? I just want to the immigration office in Brașov with the required documents and collected my certificate the next day! I have no experience of getting a mortgage but once you are "legal" it shouldn't be a problem.  I imagine you would need a Romanian back account although so far, I have managed with UK Revolut.  Brașov is a great place to live and very family friendly.
