Registering Driving License

egchelsea

We have just got to Portugal & bought our car - we have a finanças account that's linked to the IMT - how do I register my partners UK drivers license with the IMT (I read this was a necessity) we aren't looking to swap it for a PT one until it runs out but it says you need to register your license within 60 days of residency certification?

Thanks as always!

The link

https://servicos.imt-ip.pt/

is the single entry point for all these services. Within IMT Online, once your partner has logged in (with NIF + password, option "Autenticação com número de contribuinte"), he shouldn't choose the option that says ""Troca de Título de Condução Estrangeiro" /  "Foreign Driving Licence Exchange".

Instead, he should look for the specific option to fulfil the legal obligation, which is usually labelled:

  1. "Registo de Título de Condução Estrangeiro" or
  2. "Comunicação de Residência"

This service is specifically for informing the Portuguese State that the resident person is driving with a valid foreign licence, which fulfils the 60-day obligation.

Important: If, for some reason, you can't find the clear "Registo" option on the online portal, the most guaranteed way of meeting the 60-day deadline is to register in person at an IMT office / choose one citizen shop / loja do cidadão. If you choose this route, you must expressly state that you only want to register your residence and not to change the driving license.
