About Portuguese Driving License Exchange

sandraawilliams153

When you use your driving license from your original country in exchange for a Portuguese license, you have to give your original license to the IMT as this is one of the required documents, however, is it possible to ask for your original license to be returned once you have successfully obtained a Portuguese license?

Because there is a possibility that you may return to your original country, even if only temporarily, and at this time you will need to use your original license, of course you can ask to get a new copy, but sometimes this can cause some trouble, such as a delay in time.

It appears that Portugal is one of the countries where the original DL is taken away from you and you won't get it back. This is just one of the mad and stupid things you will experience when living in Portugal. So better get used to it.

When returning back I assume that your road traffic authorities will have a record of your old DL and will be able to issue a replacement.
