Renewal of Portuguese Driver's License for Permant Residents (EU)

I am currently trying to renew my  Portuguese Driver's License online. I can log into the system with my NIF and password, but I always get errors when either trying to access the information about my current license or when trying to renew the license. I do have a current medical certificate, so that shouldn't be the problem. I have a Residence Card (without a Chip) and my current (valid) DL.


I know that I could go to one of those "service providers", but I had hoped to do this online and without an appointment at the IMTT Office.

What kind of errors do you get?

I've logged in now and everything's ok. With nif + password

When I press the "Pedido de Cartao ..." field. And I get the message


Não foi possível obter os dados de carta de condução. Caso a situação persista poderá contactar o suporte através do e-mail imtonline@imt-ip.pt indicando o código: DOC1


when I try to access the information regarding my current DL.


I guess I have to go to IMTT or Citadao with all my documents.

If you search the internet for:

Imtonline ‘doc1’ erro


you'll see that this is a common error for people who don't have a "cartão de cidadão".


What I suggest is that you send an email, as they say, with the error code, and if you don't get a reply within a few days, you should go to a citizen's shop / loja do cidadão

So I will go to the loja do citadao hoping  it wont' be too crowded. Thanks for your assistance.

@TGCampo I guess the medical certificate should be uploaded by the issuing doctor to SNS portal upfront, before you proceed with online application. May be this is the reason for error.

Thanks. This has been done. I also received a printed and signed copy. Today I went to the Citizen's Office and they started to resolve this issue.

Our Citizen's Office doesn't have a full IMT representative. However, the lady thinks that it has to do with the connection between my residence card and my DL. She has taken a copy of both and sent it to IMT. She expects it will take 2 weeks to resolve this after which I should try to do it online, and if that doesn't work I should go back to the Citizen's Office.


They were friendly and willing to help, but as so often they cannot immediately solve the problem.

A few leading zeros, a wrong letter or a number in the wrong place on your residence card /  DL is enough to cause problems.

I had a call from the lady at the Citizen's Office. She thinks that it should work now only. However, I tried and it still doesn't work. I can log into the IMT system, but it doesn't even show me the current DL. So, next visit to the Citizen's Office planned for today. Fortunately, I still have lots of time.

A few hours later: Went to the Citizen's Office where they already expected us. All formalities were completed and I paid 30 EUR. Now I only have to wait until the new license arrives in the mail.

Quick update: Yesterday the new DL arrived in our mailbox. This was a surprisingly fast and painless process. However, I am surprised that even after receiving the new DL, I cannot see my DL on the IMT website (I am logging in with NIF and Password).

It seems to me that your problem now is the same as the one you had when you tried to renew online your driving licence and didn't succeed. If you can, go to the citizen's shop and demand an answer to your problem. That problem with your input data remains....

My current assumption is that the online process doesn't work for EU citizens with a residence card (instead of a citizen card with chip in it). When the opportunity comes I will ask them again, but I don't have much hope it would change anything.

Help, I am trying to exchange my US license. I get to the NIF submit it and none of the passwords I use work and I get bumped out of the system. I tried to change it in my profiles, no luck, tried a different email registration 0 it recognizes my NIF. I have tried Google, Chrome and FireFox, can access the site with two but still have the issue above.  Should I just try a walk-in at my local office? I have every document and all are current. Frustrated... Thank you for any ideas.

I think it is best to make this type of request (exchange license) at the IMT at a citizen's office (Loja do Cidadão) near you.
