Tips on obtaining the NIF and moving from Canada

Robert ONeill

Hello All:

We are 3 Seniors all family(Mom. Brother, Sister), tired of Canada's freezing Winters. We are looking to move to Portugal on the D7 Visa. Would be very interested in any tips on obtaining the NIF online as well as any other tips relative to moving from Canada.

Hi @Robert, Welcome.

NIF is one of the visa requirements, but not the only one. You can get the NIF on websites, for a fee (easy to find them if you google it), but there are other requirements that should be met in person, such as choose a location and find accomodation. So I suggest you make a trip to Portugal (Visa-free travel applies to stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period) to prepare the necessary requirements and then submit the visa application in your country. Here's some feedback from people who have done it all themselves.

If you prefer, you can always contact a solicitor ("solicitador") in Portugal (the following link will guide you to do that), preferably close to where you want to stay. Some of them may be able to provide this service to expats and guide you through the administrative procedures (NIF, open bank account, rental contract, etc).
