Grace period to register at partner's address

Hi there,

I have applied for a partner visa with my boyfriend (Dutch). Currently his accommodation will only allow one registration at the address. How long do I have for us to find a new apartment where we are both able to register, upon arrival? Is there a grace period whilst we look for somewhere, or do I have to have somewhere to register right away?

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

You have 5 days to make an appointment to register; you don't need an address to make an appointment. It's when you go to register that you need the address, there is currently a backlog with these while they catch up with Covid related issues, someone told us their appointment was 5 months away. You can register from any address where the landlord permits it; people have told us of them registering from Airbnb and hotel addresses, so it's pretty flexible.

With registering to 'any' address, doesn't it have to be the address you live at with your partner? So an airbnb or hotel address would not be possible for example?

Sorry also, is the 5 days from when you first arrive in the netherlands or when you pick up your residence permit?

Hi again.

You don't have to live with your partner (in fact, you've told us you can't), so you can register from any address where you can register from, you need to ask your landlord if they are willing to allow their address to be used for this. Airbnb and hotels are indeed possible, people have told us they have done it.

So I just meant, because as one of the stipulations of the partner visa, you have to live together, so if they carry out a routine check and we are not registered at the same address will I be penalised?

Hi again.

If he is your sponsor, then ultimately you will have to live together in order to qualify (live together as man and wife etc); when IND receive your application, they won't know if his current address does not permit it, there is no link between the owner of the property and the IND for them to know. Just to add, your visa is dealt with by a Department of the Dutch Government (IND), whereas registration is handled by the local Gemeente, it's not until you register that you become live on the national registration system. The Gemeente will ask you for written permission from your landlord that they will permit your using the address for the purposes of registration, it matters as they will charge extra gemeente belasting (council taxes).

I must admit I've never heard of the IND doing routine checks, their operational arm is all military policemen and that wouldn't go down very well outside of the ports and harbours.

Get your boyfriend to contact the IND and ask them if there is a set duration during which you can find; you can find their contact information on their website, this link will take you straight to it.
