Moving to The Netherlands

Guest4875

Hello,

I am wondering if you can help me please.

I am a British Citizen - I currently live with my husband & 8 year old daughter in Scotland.

I have been offered a position based in Utrecht.

My family & I would be planning to move to The Netherlands around the middle of November.

We are planning to stay in a holiday home for a couple of weeks till we find a flat to rent.

With regards to getting a BSN number for us, how can we get a BSN number if we don’t have a permanent address? As we can’t get a rental flat until we have a BSN number.

Also, how does it work with schools for my daughter? Is it relatively easy to register & start?

If you could provide any help, we would be most grateful.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

You don't need a "permanent address" to register with the Gemeente, you need to be a permanent resident; there is a subtle difference and both you and her family will be permanent residents on the day they move to the Netherlands to take up employment there.  The real things to watch out for are:

Contact the Gemeente within 5 days of arriving there to make an appointment for registration.

Ensure that the address you are going to register from is acceptable for registration; holiday homes are not normally in that category, but perhaps the owner has specific exemptions, my advice is to ask the owner if Gemeente registration is permissible from the address.  If it's not, we have heard of people registering from hotel and AirBnB addresses; you simply notify the Gemeente of your move when you find your permanent address and then re-register with the new one if it's in a different area.

If you have any further specific questions, please come back to us.

Hope this helps.
