Computer engineering student planning to move to France

Merieme1EE

Hello everyone,

My name is Merieme and I am currently a third-year computer engineering student. I am planning to come to France next year to continue my studies. At the same time, I would like to find a job so I can support myself and pay for my accommodation and living expenses. I joined this community to learn more about opportunities for students, work possibilities, and advice from people who already live in France. I would really appreciate any guidance or tips.

Thank you!

Hello and welcome !

It is difficult to say whether you will find a job to support your everyday life in a year. Your best option is to save money before applying for your student visa. In any case, when you apply for your student visa, you will be requested to show that you have enough money to sustain your studies and everyday life as well as proof of accommodation.

Once  your student visa is approved and you move to France, I am sure you might find opportunities by asking around you or through websites such as LinkedIn, Pole emploi and so on

French law allows foreign students to work up to 964 hours per year, or the equivalent of 60% of the maximum working hours permitted, which is approximately 60% of the legal working year or about 21 hours per week.

All student employees are entitled to the legal minimum wage (SMIC), which is approximately €11.88 gross per hour as of 2025/2026. After social security deductions (roughly 20%), the net hourly wage is about €9.40.

To secure your visa, you must prove you have sufficient financial resources independent of any potential future job earnings.

You must show proof of at least €615 per month (€7,380 per year) for living expenses.

So having a student job is effectively just having a little extra pocket money.
