Seems perfectly proportional to me! However, you'd have thought that an educated ex-ченге would avoid the amateur error of "hiding" the evidence on his own property, and in one of the first places they'd look, to boot. He obviously realised he'd boo-booed and fessed up, but a pretty poor effort IMHO...

Yes, amateurish mistakes for sure.

Especially as if he's just rung the local police as soon as he killed the thief, he may well have gotten away with it as self-defence.
