Registering with water company (General Toshevo) by stevewiltshire01

Hi,(Sorry - boring bit of admin)I am trying to register my property with the water company - move the account into my name so I can pay the bill.I went to the Municipality Building in Toshevo (where I pay all the other bills) but was told it wasn't ...

janemulberry

Steve, sorry I didn't see this sooner. I hope you found the Toshevo office! It's not easy to locate, tucked away on a side street right on the edge of town. If you need directions, let me know. Also, if you don't speak Bulgarian, try to take a ... Read More

First time buying by seanskey

I'm considering buying in the next few weeks, any advice would be great, thanks

janemulberry

It really depends what you are looking for and what your budget is. The properties to look for will be different, the places to look will be different. Village house, apartment in town, beach resort, mountain resort? How much renovation work are you ... Read More

janemulberry

Do you have any specific questions, Sean? "Any advice" covers a lot of territory! What @SimCityAT said is all correct. As a Scot, you will need to set up a Bulgarian company to buy any property apart from an apartment with no share of the land. Most ... Read More

There's a turn up for the books! by JimJ

The new prices of tickets on Sofia's public transport networks have been announced ahead of Euro Day on January 1st. Amazingly, they're all going DOWN! Admittedly, not by much but it's certainly a good start...

Some of the prices of buses in our region are going down. The 3 BGN fare will become 1.50 EUR, for example, and the 8 BGN fare will be 4 EUR. I'm not sure yet what will happen with our 2.50 BGN village bus fare, which coverts to 1.28 EUR. My guess ... Read More

Different Regions in Bulgaria - How do you decide? by Zooldrool

I was just reading this article (below) on the different economics of the different regions in Bulgaria and wondered how people here picked their place? Was it just ok price/availability or a feeling?.Have many gone for one area and then moved after ...

janemulberry

It's a shame the article doesn't link back to the original research or include the map they refer to!We ended up where we are by chance, not choice, but it's turned out well for us. We visited Bulgaria multiple times from 2012 to 2018, staying in ... Read More

Has food cost increaed massively? by jeanmandredeix

Is it me or has food costs increased over past few months? I monitored my food costs on our last 6 week visit and we have only been here two weeks so far and they seem a hell of a lot higher.

janemulberry

Prices have definitely risen sharply in Bulgaria, but this isn't recent. Shopping around can help reduce the cost -- fruit and veg at the Friday market doesn't have the same range as the supermarket but is far cheaper. I do hope prices stabilise, ... Read More

Almost 20,000 people lost their lives on EU roads in 2024. by SimCityAT

Almost 20,000 people lost their lives on EU roads in 2024.Today, on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, we say: every victim is one too many.

janemulberry

Sadly, it does support the unsafe driving comments often raised here -- only Romania has a higher road death rate. For comparison, the UK rate is 25. Read More

janemulberry

I didn't see it as showing off. Chances are you won't lose money on it. And even if you did, you need to factor in the value of your time and Zlati's time and wellbeing. It's probably worth losing a few k to avoid years of annual frustration dealing ... Read More

The price may be unreasonable. That's impossible to say without knowing how much work it covers. But I don't think raising the price after the prolonged economic disruption and forced halt to work due to COVID is the least bit unreasonable. Read More

I'm not in your area, so don't know any builders, but can say that the cost of materials skyrocketed at that time, not just in Bg but worldwide. However, 50,000 EUR sounds way excessive, unless you're haing a huge amount of work done.I hope you can ... Read More
