Managing mailboxes or PO boxes in Bulgaria

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Something as simple as receiving mail can become a whole new experience when you settle in Bulgaria as an expat. Mailing management can indeed be different from what you are used to. In order to help other expats and soon-to-be expats, we invite you to share your insights.

How do you receive mail in Bulgaria? Do you have a traditional mailbox, a PO Box, or another system?

How was it to set it up and what are the formalities?

Is the postal service reliable and secure?

How do you handle missed deliveries or forwarding your mail?

Do you have any tips you would like to share to newcomers and fellow expats?

Share your insights and experience.

Thank you for your contribution.

I'm not sure if it works the same everywhere, but in the village there's no mail delivery. Our local post office holds the mail and lets the recipient know to come and collect it. I haven't had any parcels go missing, but some have arrived severely battered! My suggestion is to get to know your local post office person, so they know who you are and where you live.

For other courier deliveries like Ekont and Speedy, a Bulgarian phone number is necessary as they will call you to arrange delivery. If you don't have that, Speedy's online system lets you change a home delivery to a collection in their office at no extra cost. For some reason it seems Ekont charge extra for that!

I am blessed with kind, helpful neighbours who will always take in parcels and post for me.
