Former Observatory near Stramni Rid, Momchilgrad

JimJ

I recall reading a post here a short time ago (might have been posted quite some time back but I only recently saw it) mentioning a property that the poster had looked at - from the brief details mentioned I assume that it's the old observatory at Stramni Rid.  Like many other people, I came across the ad for the property a while back and wondered what it was like for real:  if the original poster reads this, or anyone else has actually viewed the property, I'd be interested to hear what your impressions and thoughts are about it.  Private Message is fine - or a public discussion is also fine if you prefer.

You'll need to learn Turkish if you live there; the nearest town is Momchilgrad, population 75% Turkish-speaking.  In that neck of the woods, you really are hard-pressed to find anyone who speaks Bulgarian, let alone English...

@JimJ thank you 😊 my hubby speaks Turkish. I would love my own mini observatory in my garden (or roof of the house) and I'm a curious soul so cant resist a look to see what they've done with it ........... 😉

JimJ

It certainly isn't "mini" - it's a huge property, with a fairly huge price-tag to go with it.... 1f60e.svg

Not for the faint-hearted, I think, but having lived off-grid in France it doesn't faze me too much, even if I am 30+ years older than I was then. 1f601.svg I'd guess that you would get cut off from time to time in the winter, but it's at a lower altitude than our suburb of Sofia.

Pfff... barge pole comes to mind. :-)

@JimJ it would make an interesting business for someone younger (than me), a retreat of some sort or café/gardens. Nice place, lots of potential but definitely not for us. 😊 I was merely curious.

That's true enough. :-) And, actually, it's a lot of land/property for the money, I can see how some might be tempted. But if it's 200k to buy, and 200k to renovate... you're spending a fair few pennies.

Wow! Impressive, but yes, needs an adventurous spirit to take it on.

Fortunately(?) I have a wife to restrain my more impetuous impulses!

Back in the day (and with my previous wife) I would certainly have bought it - it's the epitome of city centre life compared with where I lived in France. 1f601.svg
