I suggest you post the make, model, and year plus your asking price! Doing so would cut back those who would not have sent you a PM had they known your car was not a car they were interested in or was priced over the amount they can spend.

Hm, once again, I didn't read the whole thread. You'd think I would have learned. My excuse is that I'm old, and it shows, and I have a hard time getting a thought out before it falls out the bottom of my head, so I sometimes rush things.

Hello i wanted to follow up on this thread. wife has a kia ready to sell.

we negotiated the price with a local and were about to sign paperwork until local requested we make the sale contract for a smaller amount to avoid overpaying taxes. is this a common practice?

lawyer and seller both advised it was common but we were skeptical and called off the deal. we were supposed to get two copies of the sale agreement. one for the agreed price and another for the price way below the asking price.

This is fairly common to do. The buyer pays the taxes and the lower price is used for that, thus the need for "another" contract.

I did this same thing in front of a Notary while selling my truck last year.  We had agreed on a price, went to the Notary, completed a contract and money exchanged hands, and then a second contract with a lower price was created with the Notary's advice on price.  Very common.  Even in Canada, the same thing happens all the time with used vehicles/boats.

I seen it in the US as well. however, since we wanted to purchase a house with the $$ we were skeptical about the legality of such sale. car would of been registered under the lower price so maybe would of been harder to prove the cash came from the car sale.

we get the notarized copy with sale price but under mvc database car sale would of shown as a lower amount.

does the notary take care of the release agreement? that is something i did not ask. in the US it is easier to sell. you keep the plates and buyer comes with their own and drives off. however, here in DR, the license plate stays on the vehicle so the new owners drive off with the plate still under sellers name to finish off paperwork.
