Ferries Del Caribe

pharrison742

There is a Ferry that sail from PR to Santo Domingo. This is cruise line type of ship. Looks more like a Navy ship, the ferry is 13hrs long, cost is $65.00. It is dog friendly and offers food and beverages same as the cruise line, etc, Dining room, buffet and other type of food services. Other services are available are salons, gyms, Casino and the same as the cruise line. There are different types of rooms like the cruise line. Other services is shipping, transport your cars, motorcycles and others. I am not sure about furniture. The ship is beautiful!

Are you recommending it? Promoting it?

General information .

Are the rooms really like a cruise ship? I haven't been on it, but from what I read, I thought the "rooms" were more like train berths.

Have you taken the trip? If so, what was it like?

I definitely want to try it someday.

@ddmcghee

Not like a cruise ship at all!

pharrison742

@ddmcghee

No. The rooms are more like older style cruise room. They are clean and orderly. You have entertainment, key passes to open the doors, air chair and more. Go online and watch the video.

@planner

Ms. Darlene,

It's like a order cruiseline.

Now trying to remember the last time anything I saw in a travel video matched anything I saw in real life...😉

I'm glad you're excited about it, I was just curious whether you'd actually made the trip yet.

pharrison742

It is another form of shipping transportation for vehicles to DR and allow you to feel comfortable with knowing that your vehicle will arrive on time and hopefully with no problems. In other words, you can stay with your vehicles.

wondering9

From Puerto Rico, sure -- but to get a car from the US mainland to PR is neither cheap nor easy (there's a stiff import tax/fee and a lot of paperwork), and there's no way (at least, none that  I ever came across) to stay with your car for that leg of the trip. Yes PR is a US territory but it's not like moving your car from one US state to another. You'd basically need to go through customs twice... following different rules and paying different fees each time.

pharrison742

Have you research it or just talking out the side neck?

pharrison742

@wondering9

Miami to PR. Research it!

wondering9

i have, I encourage others to do the same, and I don't think I can contribute anything else useful to this conversation so I'll bail now. But I def want to take that ferry someday.

planner

Miami to PR is one issue. PR to DR is another whole issue.  Just because the vehicle is brought in by ferry does not change the rules at all!

I think it would be foolish to pay an import fee into PR plus the Carrier expenses , then have to pay another carrier fee and another import fee to the DR ,

the ferry sounds like a nice excursion for someone not in a rush and maybe want to get away for a weekend , but don’t see it as a import route…. 🚢

@Tippj

I absolutely agree.

I have traveled on Ferries del Caribe , actually from Santo Domingo to San Juan.. believe they restarted the Mayaguez stop also.. Not a bad trip at all. You can take your car with you you with the right paperwork and use it in PR for a period of 60 days. The trips is 12 hours , I believe they have Thursday’s and Sunday’s. I did Sunday, less traffic just getting to the port. Cabins ok. One evening meal,and a breakfast. No casino,some slot machines, duty free shop. Some live entertainment.some people who travel back and forth just opt for a chair.the good thing is is that when you return you can load up your car with all kinds of products. Did shopping at Sam’s and Walmart.The car must be in your name and you need a plan de piloto from DR transportation agency. No tinted windows. You and your vehicle go through US customs in San Juan port. By the way I have family in PR.

Coming back I assume you were limited to the US 200 per person  to bring in without paying any ITBIS or duty???
