Getting married in Vietnam

Armand

Hi all,

We invite all the ones who got married in Vietnam or who are about to get married in Vietnam to participate in this thread :)

What are the formalities to get married in Vietnam? Is it the same for a couple of foreigners of for a mixed couple (between a foreigner and a native of Vietnam)?

Are the procedures complicated?

How long does it take to carry out all the formalities?

Thank you in advance for participating,

Armand

guess you didn't read the previous post.

1. ONLY IF at least one party is a VN citizen, or has status (Residence or Work Permit) can they get married in VN. This means tourists cannot.

2. The documentation is onerous for non-Vietnamese and involves governments and embassies, affidavits, etc.

3. Medical tests for HIV and mental fitness are required;

4. When all the documentation and tests are complete, they have to filed with the Provincial Justice Ministry. IF one party is a VN citizen the filing should be done in the province where their family resides. It makes it quicker;

5. After a period of about 30 days, providing the checks are OK, you will be give an appointment with the Marriage Registrar. O the day and at the time appear, your names will be called, and you produce your ID or passport and then you sign the register;

6. Totally unromantic, no flowers, no exchange of rings AMD usually not even kisses;

7. Newly married couples have to collect a Marriage Certificate - it is always better to get two or three copies;

8. Divorce is even easier!

NOTE: Certain government employees are prohibited by aw from marrying Foreigners.
