AU Passport Renewal & VN ID Expiry - Date & Money Crunch

hi there

76yo AU Age Pensioner. In VN for 7 years.

i just had a life-threatening medical prob and needed two ops and six weeks in hospital. and now at home recovering, and can now just walk a little bit. but at least no bad pain ike for 6 weeks before.

costing money i did not have.

(and this really happen becuase the lousy racist AU Govt still implementing illegal Partner Visa annual caps - otherwise we would have been in AU long ago. and avoided all this.

anyway, apart from almost no money now after hospital fees of about d200mill, that 'missing' six weeks has now created a critical VN ID expiry date prob

my AU Passport expiry 14/12

VN Id expiry 14/11, but must renew at least one week before ie 7/11.

we were thinking i woul go AU myself and renew passport ( and Medicare) and stay there pending my wife's partner visa (still); but my conditioon after operations make that idea very difficult with even the airports and min 8 hr flight, then finding cheap accomm, etc etc.

normal AU Passport renewal 6 weeks.

if done in VN, another $A189

if we now want urgent because of expiry dates, another $A265

so total of about $A650/d10mil

which i do not have now. we already borrow from my wife's poor family to pay for hospital.

so the question is - is there a practical way around AU passort & VN ID expiries?

ie what happens if my VN ID expires before new AU passort comes?

what happens if my VN ID expires?

very thankful for all helpful comments and suggestions.

A recent unpleasant government tightening of regulations will not make this an easy task for you.

If you were renewing your VN ID (spouse TRC??) using the same un-renewed passport, the process would be fairly simple.

Of course, that's not possible now, since you need a minimum of six months validity on your passport when obtaining a new visa or TRC or VEC.

HOWEVER, Vietnam is now routinely challenging NEW passports for these types of renewals within Vietnam.

You will now be required to provide a notarized certification of validity (to be submitted WITH your new passport) from your EMBASSY or CONSULATE, affirming that the new passport is indeed valid and does indeed belong to you.

You can thank myriad international fraud-sters and counterfeiters of documents for forcing the government of Vietnam into taking this action.

Here's my best recommendation for dealing with this:

As long as your current ID/TRC/VEC is still valid, make an appointment for notary services at your  Embassy/Consulate for at least 2 weeks (10 working days) before your current ID/TRC/VEC expires.

You should hopefully have your new passport by then.

Go to your appointment to have your new passport notarized.

As soon as possible (same day if time allows) take your new passport and notarization document to the immigration department in that same city and submit your ID/TRC/VEC application along with your new passport and notarization.

I fully understand your financial dilemma, but that's not anything that anyone in the forum can assist with.

You'll likely need to pay for the quickest passport service possible.

Good luck 🙏

Many thanks OB.

we needed more good news. ;-)

is this new rule applied across the board? or selectively?

what local automony is there?

so only option going this route, is

to renew AU pp asap using Urgent option (total cost ~d10mill for 5 yr)

Then AU consulate notisation

i wonder ... if i get new pp delivered to consulate if i can get both at once?

and THEN apply for VN ID renewal (currently 5yr TRC)

fk.

it really makes me rethink option of just going back to AU but that has so many downsides too.

as an aside, what happens if my TRC just expires?

kindest

@john10168

oh man, your case is so specif that even another Australian could not respond. However:  the Consul obviously needs the document on his hand first, then he can issue the certificate.

I cannot confirm or reject that new passports need an additional certificate. Personally, it is a madness, worst if it were in the law, because you know: the certificate by the AU Consul then needs to be legalized and translated into vietnamese, so, another million and 3 days.

it's supposed that nowadays Vietnam is member of the Apostille Convention. Thinking that Vietnam cannot recognize a new empty passport at once, I dont know how they will work with Apostilles than mostly are electronic  🤔

About your 5y-TRC, I am courious, which is your migration type in Vietnam, business?  how it can be as longer as your passport validity? Are you sure it is a TRC ?    Anyway, better take a notarized copy of your invoices and medical reports to justify a major forces in front of Migration Authorities, to be fined, but not banned

Good luck
