Is your passport from Nepal?

You'll need to contact your state department if your embassy/consulate is closed without emergency contact info.

Good luck.

Oh dear. I received your PM. Thank you for writing me

Certainly not a nice position to find oneself in, especially in light of this being the Tet holidays with immigration offices closed.

When you applied for the Vietnam eVisa, did you take advantage of the full 90 days permitted for tourists? If not, what is the "valid until" date showing on each of your eVisas?

If the eVisa's exit date is imminent, would the friend who has lost their passport be comfortable staying alone in Vietnam until this can be cleared up? If so, I suggest you and your other friend leave Vietnam so as to not incur an overstay penalty/fine. If your friend is not comfortable remaining in Vietnam alone, expect the penalty to be (for each person)...

Overstaying for less than 16 days: VND VND 500,000 – VND 2,000,000 (~US $22 – US $88)

Overstaying for 16 days – less than 30 days: VND 3,000,000 – VND 5,000,000 (~ US $133 – US $221)

Continue to check with the police daily to see whether the passport has been recovered. Immigration's offices reopen on Thursday (15/02), at which time the owner of the lost passport should visit them, bringing a copy of the police report where the loss was recorded.

Contact the nearest embassy/consular office of the passport holder's country. If Nepal, that would be at...

Nepal Consulate General in Guangzhou, China

phone#  +86 (20) 87066400

email  cgnguangzhou@126.com  cgnguangzhou@qq.com

Prior to contacting the passport holder's embassy/consulate, be aware that this will probably result in the immediate cancellation of the lost passport. Be certain it hasn't been returned to the police, or perhaps even having been misplaced (and forgotten) by the passport holder.

I hope some other members can chime in with additional suggestions. Such a disappointing ending to your Vietnam visit.

Please keep us updated on this Goonsselena. It is an unfortunate event which could happen to any of us.

Understood. The police have probably (hopefully?) already created a file which the immigration officers will be able to view when the passport holder visits there.

On Thursday 15/02, visit the official Vietnam immigration office, here. (Link) Have your friend ask the immigration officer if they would qualify for a visa extension.   This is important.

The passport will have to be replaced by the Nepal immigration authorities. The visit to Vietnam's immigration office is to make sure your friend stays within the guidelines governing foreigners visiting Vietnam.

After making application for the visa extension, have your friend then ask the Vietnam immigration officer about notifying the Nepal authorities of the lost passport.

In the meantime, keep checking daily at the police station(s) to see if the passport has been returned.

Tell your friend not to stress too much. The immigration officials, both in Vietnam and in Nepal, will have experience in these matters. Once your friend sets the process in motion, the people who deal with these situations on a regular basis will then do the rest.

Losing a passport is not an uncommon occurrence. Scary, frustrating, and worrisome, but certainly not uncommon.

The bright side? A few more days in Vietnam without the overcrowding from the Tet visitors :)
