Use of maps.me in vietnam

cooper1203

morning all,

When i was in hcm in 2017 I used maps.me to navigate round the sites if they were near enough to walk to. With my upcoming trip (cant wait) i have downloaded maps.me again and whilst i realise it relies on users of open source maps to get the information so it is more than likly my hotels havent been added of the 5 i am using going from north (hanoi) to hcm none of them come up and just inputting the street doesnt seem to pick up the right place according to google maps.

Does anyone use maps.me has it stopped being effective in vietnam or is it this old codger doing somthing wrong (more than likly)

many thanks

Coop

I've had wonderful results with Google Maps. Even the smallest of hems, the thinnest of walkways across rice paddies have been shown.

Please let us know if it works for you.

I have tried using maps.me in Vietnam and Thailand when I have been offline, but it's not very good. Google maps is much better, but of course you must be online for it to work. My only issue with Google maps is that there seems sometimes to be too much detail.

I think most people will speak to the great effectiveness of Google maps in finding directions here.

As important to me: I frequently share Google maps links with other people and find that to be successful since they also use the same app.

if you never share links with anyone that might not be a consideration.

Malcolm, there is the option to download an "off-line map" of your area of interest in the google map app. The app will then direct you by GPS

You can also take screenshots of the map.

@Aidan in HCMC thank you.

Thanks all,  I have managed to download some google maps for off line use.  if i zoom out so that i get more coverage of the bit of the country/city does that alter the level of detail available?

No, but it will affect the download time and the storage space on your phone (it's not overly memory-hungry).

Congrats on downloading some offline maps.
