New US Ambassador to the Philippines
Perhaps of some interest ...

The new US ambassador to the Philippines, MaryKay Carlson, vowed on Friday that the United States would continue its partnership with the Philippines as she presented her credentials to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the Palace.
“We are fellow democracies, bound by a rich shared history. We share the powerful, positive ties of family, embodied in the 4 million Filipino-Americans in the United States and the 350,000 US citizens in the Philippines,” Carlson said.
“Our alliance is a bedrock of our bond, and our Mutual Defense Treaty and other agreements are at the heart of our commitment to help defend the Philippines’ sovereignty and independence,” she added.
“I arrived in Manila inspired by the bond between our great nations and devoted to making it even stronger. I feel especially fortunate to arrive in the early days of your administration,” Carlson said in her remarks during her visit to Marcos.
“The United States is committed to partnering with you and your team as you move ahead. As you act to ensure the security, prosperity, and freedoms of the Philippine people, we are here to help, and invested in your success,” she added.
Carlson said she looked forward to the Philippines and the US working together to develop new trade and investment ties, partner on clean energy solutions, protect marine and terrestrial resources, and help tackle the climate crisis.
The envoy said that she looks forward to working with the Marcos administration “to upgrade and modernize our alliance to face new challenges, expand bilateral trade and investment, and promote democratic freedoms and good governance.”
Carlson, who was appointed by US President Joe Biden, replaces Ambassador Sung Kim, who ended his tour of
duty in 2020.
Before arriving in Manila, Carlson was deputy chief of mission and chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She also previously served as deputy chief of mission and chargé d’Affaires in New Delhi, India, and as principal deputy executive secretary on the staff of the Secretary of State in Washington, D.C.
A foreign service officer since 1985, she has also been posted to US diplomatic missions in China, Ukraine, Hong Kong, Mozambique, Kenya, and the Dominican Republic.
Heather Variava, who has been serving as chargé d’affaires ad interim since September 2021, will remain in Manila as deputy chief of mission.

President Biden's appointed Ambassador I'm sure will be able to assimilate the post fairly quickly. Both Argentina, her previous posting, and the Philippines share a strong heritage: Spanish ancestry, corruption, double dealing, lack of inward investment, red tape, low productivity growth and a similar Gini Coefficient (income inequality - haves and have nots).
MaryKay Carlson will without doubt be at home with the 'Fashionista' lifestyle too . Filipina's share the same Appareil dress code as their Argentinian female counterparts. Outside of Europe Buenos Aires women are probably on a par with Manila in terms of dress sense, femininity, and class. One of my favourite destinations in South America if only as a people watcher is BA's Recoleta café district imbibing the occasional Espresso

As with many articles in the press, you have to read between the lines as much as you read the actual lines. In this case, I see a very politically biased piece thus, much as I agree with a couple of points in it, I have to dismiss the whole thing as unreliable.
Even if I happen to agree with a point, I don't accept 'truth' I'm fed by biased reporters. However, I will note points of view and add them to the collection of news and events I keep in my head.
Edit - Who prints a piece is commonly as important as the story itself. A quick look at the Times and its owners suggests there should be little believed until it has been verified by less biased outlets.

I'm referring to the US:
Hate crimes against Filipinos? I think it's all ado about nothing. Sure an isolated crime against against a Filipino and the news, especially Filipino news gets themself worked up to a Tizzy.
The catalyst is the rap caused by the Chinese. . .Covid. . . . human rights . . . . unfair trade rights. . . . massive pollution . . . . stealing intellectual property rights. . . . US manufacturing jobs going overseas, that especially effecting the lower middle class and below.
A second very limited second group may be the Koreans who own Ma and Pop businesses
that cater to the poor minorities and are sometimes accused of price gouging.
So every time some ignorant fool attacks a Filipino or anyone who has Asian features, they think they are attacking Chinese and/or Koreans.
I don't think these ignorant fools have the mindset to specifically target Filipinos.

I beg to differ.
As for race hate crimes, look at the numbers to see who gets targeted. When hating Muslims was the rage, Muslims and anyone who looked Muslim was in danger of attack from morons. Now your government hates China (Thanks to Obama's Pacific shift), Asians are top of the list.
Of course, the US police are still shooting more African Americans and Native Americans than anyone else, but old habits die hard.
Covid came from China, or at least that strain did. Are you going to blame Africa for Monkey pox in the US, or people engaging in gay sex and spreading it when they stick to bonking within small groups? The same goes for AIDS.
Gays this time, likely prostitutes and their customers will be the next spreaders.
By the way, take a look at the spread of Spanish flu in WW I - Guess which country spread that - Yep, the US. Look at the spread against troop movements. It was only called the Spanish flu because they were the only country that didn't lie about the rates of infection, thus appeared the worst when the others lied.
Human rights - The reports are coming from an anti-Chinese government political organisation and are amplified by a country that has concentration camps for the very religious group they claim is being oppressed in China. Not saying China doesn't do it, just the moral high ground isn't with the country that is moaning the most about it. Then consider the US government's human rights record - oh, they hide their war crimes, lock up those who report them, and sanction the international criminal court when they try to investigate.
Massive pollution - China is the worst in the world by country, but the US comes out the worst if measured by head of population.
Intellectual property rights - Got that right. The business culture there says, if you can't keep innovating, it's your fault if someone copies and outsells you because you didn't improve and get new gear out there. That is why Chinese tech, including EVs and ESS, is hammering the west.
Manufacturing is going out of the US because the US can't compete. That's just capitalism at work. As a self proclaimed capitalist country, the US has little to complain about.
You also forgot to mention the moaning country has positioned itself to be able to blockade oil supplies from the middle east to China. That's why China is massively in the lead on renewable energy. It's a terrific example of laziness and backwards thinking losing in a tragic manner to hard work designed to make sure well laid out plans work well.
Hate and using stereotypes to try to spread hate is very silly.

Snips are from Fred<SNIP>Now your government hates China (Thanks to Obama's Pacific shift), Asians are top of the list.. . . Hate is a pretty strong word, the current government is softer on China. It is ridiculous to think there is any kind of list of hate.<SNIP>Of course, the US police are still shooting more African Americans and Native Americans than anyone else, but old habits die hard.Lets stay on the subject, hate crimes and discrimination against Filipinos in the US. Why use the OP's introduction for you to spew your wrath and indignation towards the US?<SNIP>Are you going to blame Africa for Monkey pox in the US, or people engaging in gay sex and spreading it when they stick to bonking within small groups? The same goes for AIDS.Gays this time, likely prostitutes and their customers will be the next spreaders.I'm not blaming Africa for Monkey pox, no where did I mention Monkey pox, Aids, Gays, or Prostitutes. Speaking of the LBGT society, Indonesia which you are a citizen of being 80% Moslem is " less tolerant " of these groups than the US.Indonesia has the largest Moslem in the world and does not recognize Judaism but recognizes most other religions including Protestants,Catholics, Hinduism & Confucianism.<SNIP>By the way, take a look at the spread of Spanish flu in WW I - Guess which country spread that - Yep, the US. Look at the spread against troop movements. It was only called the Spanish flu because they were the only country that didn't lie about the rates of infection, thus appeared the worst when the others lied.As quoted by you "It was called the Spanish Flu because they were the "only country" that didn't lie about the rates. These "other" countries were unwilling to announce the toll the Flu was taking on their troops and supplies.Spain was not involved in WW One, if it was, they would have not released their true rates either.<SNIP>Human rights - The reports are coming from an anti-Chinese government political organisation and are amplified by a country that has concentration camps for the very religious group they claim is being oppressed in China. The above statement is laughable. . . . . . .<SNIP>Massive pollution - China is the worst in the world by country, but the US comes out the worst if measured by head of population. The US has clean air in spite China exporting greenhouse gasses through the atmosphere to the United States as evident in our western states.<SNIP> Intellectual property rights - Got that right. The business culture there says, if you can't keep innovating, it's your fault if someone copies and outsells you because you didn't improve and get new gear out there. That is why Chinese tech, including EVs and ESS, is hammering the west.Again this statement is beyond belief. . . .Innovation from the Chinese? 87% of the value of counterfeits originate in China. China innovation comes from hacking the engineering, the designs and developments from other countries.<SNIP>Manufacturing is going out of the US because the US can't compete. That's just capitalism at work. As a self proclaimed capitalist country, the US has little to complain about. The trend now is global companies who use China for manufacturing are leaving and setting up production in other countries, that's business.- @Fred

Is is that soft approach why US naval deployments in the South China sea have increased since Biden took office?
As for racists attacks by America's especially moronic far right against anyone who looks Chinese
You have to take into account extremists (right or left) tend to be utter morons so, when politicians spew hate, that manifests itself as physical violence against innocent people.
Trump did a number on China, but Biden has done little to slow it down.
Obama started the game but Trump added covid as a reason to hate people. I'm pretty sure I saw someone do the same in this thread.
I see it this way, if someone has to make up crap in order to hate someone, I tend to question their IQ and/or sanity.

Fred I have said all I'm going to say about this thread, I didn't make my original post to enter a debate with you.
But there is one thing. . . I don't believe a moderator, which you are, should be entering into a discussion with a poster especially since you have the power to ban them or delete their posts at your discretion. . . . Also a moderator posting his political views on an Expat forum which is not his country.
I wouldn't think of posting political views on the Indonesian Expat forum.

What political views?
I think the lot are a bunch of twits so I don't have any such opinions.
It goes like this - The moment you believe lies spread about any given country by another with a vested interest in damaging the first, is the moment you start to believe a war is justified.
The toads Bush and Blair did that with Iraq, and people believed there were actually WMDs.
This crap about China starting the virus and all the rubbish that is spouted without evidence is essentially the same.
Want a war? Listen to people with a financial interest in starting one.

Wouldn't mind being on the Australian Ambassador's guest list .. sure to be great steaks on his barbie, and the beer would be drinkable. Must say, he assisted us quite considerably once when we were applying for an Australian visa for my soon-to-be wife. One email, written bloke to bloke and personally to him at the Aussie embassy in Manila, and my wife's Australian visa was through via return email the next day. With just 25 million or so of we Aussies on the planet, that's the way we do business with each other. Personal like. Hope the new US Ambassador to the Phils is equally as good.
