Contract job in Malaysia

Hi All,

I'm AS400 developer with 5+ years of experience working in MNC, Chennai. My current take home is 52k & I'm married expecting a baby in months.

I've been offered a job in Insurance company in KL with 8k RM/month. And its a contract job of 1 year with possible extension. Also the pay will be under consultancy name.

My ask here is, did anybody accepted the offer like this & moved to Malaysia leaving job in India. What are the challenges faced? Is it a good offer if I'm living with my family in KL? How much will I be able to save?

About me, I'm never a lavish spender & count each penny while spending on anything.

Any contacts or guidance will be highly helpful. Thanks in advance for all you do.

If you would be working for a contract outsourcing company it  is never the best solution. Direct employment is much better. With outsourcing there is high pressure and often problems leaving the company. What I mean by that is to change job a No Objection letter is required and outsourcers are notorious for not providing it.

All it means though is as long as you don't renew your employment pass with them after 1 year and are prepared to leave Malaysia and start again to find work it will be OK.

Check on Numbeo for a comparison of your current location to KL for cost of living.

Tax for first 182 days is flat rate 28%. But the difference between non-resident rate (28%) and resident rate is refundable the following year when tax return is submitted. So it just affects take home pay for 6 months and overpayment refunded about May/June following year.

You can work out tax once considered resident using this guide.

At a rough guess you will be able to save about RM 3000 per month. I imagine there will be no pension contributions when working for an outsourcer
Thanks for the answer. That helps a lot.
The salary is probably a bit on the low side with 5 years experience. RM 9500 upwards is more realistic
I don't know if this would be of any help http://www.ncsglobaltech.com/index.php/careers
