The expat community in Melaka is primarily related to either the oil refineries, or semi-conductors. The main place they are living is in Klebang, ca 5 km from Melaka centre, on (or close to) the "beach" (be warned, the water is not swim-able). Popular condo's are "Klebang 8" and "Ocean Palms". These cater mainly to expats, and are priced higher. You can find detached houses cheaper than apartments in these condo's, but they will not be in the "expat" areas. You meet the expats by living in these areas, or frequenting the restaurants there (Berts, Cliffs, Seafarer...). Children are always a good way to meet other parents.

Generally, Melaka is not a very big town, and some people might find that it is lacking many of the amenities expats usually require. I would suggest you visit the town before coming/making any decisions, unless you already have been here.
