Traffic cams have been used for some while to monitor Jakarta's terrible jams but the police have just introduced a trial ticketing scheme.
For the unaware, Jakarta has an odd/even number plate rule that reduces the traffic in the city. If your plate ends with an odd number, you can only drive in some parts of the city on odd numbered dates, even following suit.
Comparing the traffic before and after the scheme started, it seems to be a success as many of the worst jams simply don't happen any more. The city's traffic is still terrible, but not even close to as terrible as it was before the odd/even plan.
I took special note of this on my last jaunt into the city and the cops are taking it seriously, setting up many checkpoints and enforcing the rules.

Traffic violators caught on camera as e-ticket system trial runs

Ninety-three violations were recorded on the fourth day of the trial of the electronic-based ticketing system, dubbed Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE), on Thursday, director of the traffic division of the Jakarta Police Sr. Comr. Yusuf said.

The number was down from the previous day when the Police recorded 104 violations, Yusuf said as reported by tempo.co.

The E-TLE trial has run since Monday along the Jakarta thoroughfares of Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Jenderal Sudirman.

Hidden cameras are utilized to record violators, Yusuf said. A team from Jakarta Police will then analyze the footage and match them to the database of Jakarta vehicle owners.

Tickets will be sent to violators’ addresses as stated on their vehicle registration certificate (STNK). Information on the time, place, type and photo of the violation will be attached to the ticket.

It’s a good idea if people follow the rule, a few cities around the world totally ban vehicles/ bikes etc for a 24hr period if they have a certain number or other identification on the plate
Quite a few a doing a total ban in city centres
The few times I have stayed in Jakarta the pollution from from vehicles is one of the worst I’ve experienced
50% of new cars in the uk will be hydrid or electric from 2030 if Indonesia pulls its finger out on vehicle tax / vehicle import tax it can only be a good thing for everyone’s health

The odd/even scheme covers the jams (or at least helps a lot) and the pollution levels will drop with it.
It is my opinion Indonesia MUST invest in EV tech and try to catch up with China because that's very likely to be the next move in personal transport.
Motorbikes are a massive market in Indonesia and there's still nothing in the EV range that can even touch the big internal combustion engine players, Yamaha's new fuel efficient tech being the best so far. Electric bikes available at the moment are mostly not that fantastic, way to limited in range for most people, and the price is unattractive.
I took a look at a Chinese EV micro car yesterday, something Indonesia should be seriously considering developing. It has all the things you need for short range city driving, you can park 2, maybe 3, in the space a normal car takes, and it's fully enclosed to you can wear a suit in lousy weather.

Get EV micro cars and motorbikes developed and sold, then ban all personal transport that uses internal combustion engines from Jakarta.

Pollution levels will drop but steadily increase again in a short period due to the markets demand and zero emission tests annually
Electric is the only way only other way is total ban, but I wouldn’t like to be the guy who tries to implement a ban

Riding through the city this week there has been 0 police checks when last month it was daily. Yes they are somewhere but its not consistent
For the police cameras I haven't noticed any signs telling motorists that they are being videoed. As usual these things look good in the press, last as long as there are police to do it and then everything goes back to normal and little is said after.

Perhaps but I saw the coppers out and about on Wednesday, and they were pulling cars with the wrong plates.

They need to do this daily to really get the message across and fine all cars but somedays they are not about.
For instance every Monday morning there is a nevef any police waving at the traffic at Polda Semanngi but for the rest of the week they are there. Its been like that for years.
