Are you a proper white Australian or an Indian by origin?

150,000K PM is quite a lot of money in India. Sure depends on which city in India though!

But consider this, for 25-30,000 INR a month you should be able to get a luuxury penthouse or something (with a cook and cleaners etc..  )

For about 8 - 10,000 INR a night you could live in a star luxury hotel in India.

The average Upper middle class income in India should be somewhere around 150,000 K depending on sector (Like IT, finance etc..)

I am an Indian by birth and upbringing. I have been overseas for quite a few years now. While I have been back a few times, they have only been for very short periods of time on holidays to meet up with close family.
Currently I am exploring opportunities in and around Delhi. Not really sure what to expect.

What is the difference in being employed as an expat and as a local?
Are there any advantages of one over the other?

The difference between an expat & a local is that being a local you won't be required for visa & FR headaches. Being an expat, yes you'll be having advantage if you've good experience/knowledge.
Foreign passport holder are already employed in different places, regarding legalities you'll have to contact the FRO.

To answer your question:
If you are holder of a foreign passport, it's best to seek for a contract as an expatriate as this will give you much more advantages such as:
- flights go/return to the place of origin (on start and end of contract)
- annual flights for vacation
- accomodation
- transport costs
- schooling for children (if applicable) till their 18th birthday
- better salary
- administrative costs for visas / employment permit beared by employer.

I reckon u might be eligible for dual citizenship under person of indian origin for staying in india but still an australian for employment. I agree with Arlette its always advantegeous to work as an expat. BTW i m from Sydney as well.
