Is Georgia a good place to bring a dog?

First, there is not a big issue with stray dogs, in fact, one of the first things I noticed about Georgia, and in a very positive way, is that all of their stray dogs are tagged and seem to be well fed. They are also better behaved; not aggressive or fearful, than any stray dogs I've encountered in other countries. Most people have their dogs on leashes when they walk them, as they should, but you can let them run free if you go to one of the open nature spots - my friend who goes to a park regularly tells me that people let their dogs run loose there and he also does not recall seeing any confrontations between any of the strays or the pets. I walk regularly up into the hills above Vake and around Turtle Lake and see many dogs being let loose up there and it's heaven for them.  The dogs are well behaved and I have met several of them. As many people have dogs here you should be able to rent a place that will allow them, although of course it will be more limited. A house would be best, for the dog and for you, but I see many who have theirs in their apartment...even big dogs. Hope this helps and good luck!

I have a big dog (german shepherd) that i was supposed to foster then covid happened. Let me tell you as a dog owner. Many of the apartments are "newly renovated" and the owners have a big issue with animals in their places. So you are limited to the area and type of apartment that you can look for having a pet. Also with the stray situation - yes there are many strays and some of them have tags from the first burst of tagging that started in georgia - now however that is drastically slowing down and non of the strays are neutered not the males or the females! therefore the puppy population is enormous and growing everyday by the day with puppies and pregnant dogs being thrown on the streets or worse. Due to the large amounts of stray dogs they dont spray the animals or surrounding park areas for ticks or fleas and my dog ends up covered constantly and then my whole process starts again to clean her.

I have exactly the same question. And, a German Shepherd as well!

The stray dog situation is heartbreaking. I don’t know if I can handle it if the speutering and care is no longer happening.

I have started also looking at Batumi. The thought of a sea view at those prices is very hard to resist.

But, they are all so tiny. And, I don’t see anyone with dogs in any of the videos.

The problem i found out the hard way here is that the animals dont have any rights. It is not a must to spay your pet, some people have puppies they are cute and then when they chew furniture they throw them on the street. The opposite feelings for animals are  they either hate animals or they love animals. I have had an instance where people throw poisoned food down for street dogs and there is no laws or punishment here. Batumi sea area i hear great things but most people are afraid of black dogs and my poor shepherd gets screamed at and not treated nice because of this. My experience not saying all are like this but the not so nice experience are the memorable ones.

There are ignorant people here in the U.S. who think there is something weird or sinister about black GSDs, too. It is a perfectly acceptable coat color under the  breed standard. Dark rick colors are strongly preferred over pale, washed out ones. I have known many people in Schutzhund/IPO who love black GSDs and are very happy when a solid black pops up in a litter.

My girl is dark sable. The original GSD, Horand von Grafath was a grey sable. The saddle pattern did not come into vogue until the Rin Tin Tin silliness. The original Rinny was a fear biter with poor temperament.

She is actually Czech, top and bottom. Her breeder in the U.S. works very hard preserving original old foundation lines. Of course, for awhile, there was plenty of commingling of Czech and E German, but, the lines were compatible.

What you are telling me is more than enough to stick a pin in *my* Georgian Dream. I cannot imagine not being in a state of constant depression with the situation so terrible for the poor dogs. I could never just look the other way.
