Houses with burglar bars

Shawn Briddon

Good evening.

I was wondering why there are so many houses with burglar bars for rent or sale.  Is it the area? Is it the norm to have these?

I see some properties have alarm systems aswell?

Advise on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello there,

It has become the norm now due to the rising cases of thefts (nearly everywhere on the island).

Mauritius has changed over the years (higher cost of living, drugs issues etc) . Better you get a house with bars for peace of mind and to deter burglary.

In the developments there seem to be no bars - they have security I guess - is robbery still a problem in those areas in your opinion?

I think that for houses built in gated community where there's a security guard posted, it might not be relevant. Personally, as I mentioned in another thread i am in the process of building, i will get bars fixed only for the ground floor... (for the time being) we'll see how it goes.

It is still a problem, thefts are on the rise

I guess it's also a perceptions thing.

If your used to zero crime.. and now on the island there's some crime. It might feel bad. But if you come.from Europe where crime  is common .. to me the island feels very very safe.

I am an unmarried business active 60+ lady thinking of moving to Mauritius as an interim on the retirement visa first for a few months, but I live in Dubai where there is no crime in terms of home theft, robberies in the home, on the street, etc. Just viewing some of these homes online, although beautiful, feels off with all the burglar bars on all the windows. Living with no crime is very difficult to relocate to a place that looks unsafe, so I would appreciate some feedback please, thank you!

Also, what would be the safest areas to reside in? I also have 2 dogs that I will relocate

I see the last post here was 2022, so I can only guess that the crime situation has worsened!

Good morning, it depends where you live. In a gated community burguly is almost not happening. The bars on the windows are more to give the foreigners a safe feeling. People from South Africa are used of them and don’t feel safe without them. Crimes on the street , I didn’t see or hear about that. Bringing your dogs is no problem, i came to Mauritius with my 10 dogs 😁👍 . Greetings

@Alexie623 hi I’m 63 and I will be relocating this year as well. I’ve looked at it from all angles, followed & joined a number of fb groups over the last year and as an ex South African & Brit I know both ends of the crime spectrum.

From what I can see, for a 60-year-old, the primary risk is typically environmental (cyclones from Nov-May) rather than violence of any kind. Though expats should be vigilant against petty theft, such as pickpocketing and burglary, particularly in tourist-heavy areas (same as anywhere in the world)  We are maybe seen as legitimate targets with perceived affluence that ‘won’t miss a wallet or two’ if you know what  thatI mean. But it’s nothing like South Africa, where violent crime is almost endemic.

To be honest, all I see is an environment is ideal for a calm, quiet life, offering beautiful beaches, good climate, and friendly communities in a world that’s slowly going mad. If anything what i do worry about is the fact so many people are currently looking for options and prices are set to rocket for everyone, everywhere and Mauritius will be a magnate to the wealthier ones that’s for sure.
