Official residency for citizens

Ottomus

When a Mauritian citizen comes back to Mauritius, then how to "officially" be resident? Where to go (some government office?) and how to prove that you are an "official" resident of Mauritius (some government document)? The question is for Mauritian citizens.

Hello,

Could you please confirm whether the person has a Mauritian ID card or passport ?

@Bhavna,

Hi Bhavna,

Does that make a difference? Person has both.

Hi,

Of course it is a big difference, with the id and passport, you can open a bank account straight ahead. Buy a sim card and register with your id card.

I was not born in MRU but I inherited the citizenship. With the ID and passport, I just live like any other local citizens. Except I don't speak the language, I've got cheated uncountable times.

Cheers,

If the person already has a Mauritian ID or passport, there is no additional formality required to prove Mauritian nationality and right to reside here. These documents are sufficient. Of course, as Pandora correctly pointed out, if he or she wants to start a business, open a bank account, or complete other administrative procedures, they will need to contact the relevant authorities. But an ID or passport is enough.

You are a citizen of Mauritius so your question doesn't make sense. But If you are asking about taxation then You need to be in Mauritius for more than 183 days in a year to be a tax resident. Then you will be required to Pay your taxes in Mauritius. That's it.

That's more or less one of the criteria but for more information, he has to contact his tax adviser

As above, a Mauritian passport and ID card prove citizenship, but not residency.

I would hope that once you start to pay tax in Mauritius, you become officially 'resident'. I do not know if there are any other legal documents required. You might have to show that you were living outside the country and hence were not paying tax prior to your return to Mauritius.

Those foreigners who are now living in Mauritius on the various visa schemes become 'residents' for tax purposes once they start paying tax in Mauritius.

However,I am not an expert in this field.

Best wishes.
