Secure Estate/Compound - Rental (Island of Sal)

    Good day,Please could someone confirm whether there are any secure compounds for an expat to rent in on the Island of Sal? If not, what would the alternatives be?Thanks in advance.        -@niccivdb

Hi Nicolette,

Not quite sure what you meant by "compound" or by "secure".

Almost all of the large apartment complexes on the island of Sal have unarmed security guards at the entrances and patrolling the premises.

The alternate is to hire your own security for your apartment or house if the building is unsecured. Or you and the other tenants can band together and share the cost of a security guard for the building.

Finally, Sal has no crime like you might be exposed to in South Africa. There are no violent attacks, car jackings, home invasions, kidnappings, or anything of that sort. The biggest issue is petty theft. So security guards are employed simply as watchmen, and to keep street sellers away so they don't pester the residents.

@CVAngelo Thanks so much for your input. Yes in SA we have different levels of estates/compounds, some will have access control where the tenants would have a remote to open the gate. While our high level estates have security guards that will call tenants to allow visitors access into the estate. This is due to house break-ins occurring. Some estates will consist of freestanding homes or duplexes.
