The proposed amendments seek to modernize the legal framework, providing a stronger basis for addressing human trafficking effectively. The changes aim to shift the focus from treating victims as defendants and impose stricter penalties on those convicted.

Additionally, the fourteenth edition of the SBM Insight report underscores Mauritius' status as a prominent international financial center. The report highlights the country's reliability for structuring and managing investments, contributing significantly to national value-added and job creation. Despite challenges, Mauritius maintains distinct features, attracting renowned companies and investors, particularly in sectors like FinTech and virtual assets.

Japan donates new patrol boats to NCG

In another development, Japan donated four high-speed patrol boats to the National Coast Guard, strengthening Mauritius' maritime fleet. Prime Minister Jugnauth emphasized the importance of the partnership with Japan in coastal management, maritime safety, and economic development. Japan's grant supports the acquisition of maritime security equipment, enhancing the NCG's capabilities in protecting the coastline, combating illegal activities, and responding to emergencies. The Prime Minister also mentioned ongoing collaborations with Japan to upgrade the coastal surveillance radar system and acquire a new patrol vessel from India, further enhancing surveillance capabilities. The Japanese ambassador commended Mauritius for organizing the Third Ministerial Conference on Maritime Safety and Security in the Western Indian Ocean, emphasizing the importance of protecting Mauritian waters against potential threats.
