Where to go if you want to take a dip when beaches are closed?

Written byAnne-Lise Mtyon 11 June 2021

Yes, the beaches are closed. And yes, it is a little cold. But no, not everyone has access to a warm personal pool. Here are some places you can go for a swim while the beaches are still on lockdown.

Rochester Waterfalls

These are probably the best known waterfalls of the island. The Rochester Waterfalls are situated in the village of Souillac and are easily accessible by car, although we have to warn you it is an off-road track. The waterfalls are clearly indicated on road signs and the location is also available on Google Maps. Disclaimer: The water is a little cold, even in summer. But it is so worth it!

Exil Waterfall

Known in Mauritius as Cascade Leon, this waterfall is found in Britannia in the south. The waterfall is not accessible by car but you can drive up to the L'Exil Lodge. This is still an offroad track but once there, you can park your car safely and start your 15 minutes walk to the waterfall. You can enjoy a swim and play around in the makeshift swing that has been installed by the pool while enjoying the beautiful sight of the Exil waterfall.

Natural pools around the island

Beaches are closed, but what about rocky cliff waterfronts? Well, until said otherwise, you can venture to rocky waterfronts from where you can often enjoy natural pools. There are natural pools in the Gris-Gris cliffs, in Albion cliffs as well as in the Flic-en-Flac cliffs. Now, the pools are of varying sizes and while you will not be able to enjoy doing laps in all of them, you will at least get to wear your bathing suits and immerse yourself in the water!

Eau bleue Waterfalls

The Eae bleue waterfalls are found right after the village of Cluny. There are six waterfalls and the locations are available on Google maps. You can swim in the pools of at least two of the waterfalls. Plus side: the water is blue and the waterfalls are mesmerizing!

Your friend's pool!

And yes, if you don't fancy hiking or long off-road routes to get to a waterfall, do not hesitate to ask your friends who have pools if you can have a swim. Bring some snacks, or take-away and treat them to a meal and drinks to say thank you!
