For students, the best possibility is to look for advertisements on pin-boards at University about rooms in a shared apartment (WG).  This is by far the most likely and affordable way.

Hi, Good day and thanks for the response. the apartment is vacant now
and you can start to rent as soon as possible but sorry the viewing of
the flat will not be possible at all because i have just left the
country to UK (Manchester) and i have the flat keys here with me for
security purpose, I just relocated here in UK few days back due to my
new job and that is the main reason I am renting out the flat but I
can only send you the flat pictures to see and have an idea and
impression of how the flat looks inside so you can decide from the
flat pictures either to rent from the flat or not.  I will be waiting
to hear from you soon. Here is my whatsapp number you can also add me
up to make it easier whatsapp:****

This is the classic rental scam that I know from other countries (where they ask for a pre-payment to receive the keys - and of course you neither get keys, apartment or money back).
But this is very rare in Germany, because it is uncommon to pay anything before the move-in day (so such a request will set off alarm bells!) and it is impossible to rent a place without visiting it and personally meeting the landlord first.

Apart from the excellent advice in post #4, you'd have to be crazy to rent a place without taking a look around it first.

This is worth a read
