Advice on relocation service verse shipping frieght etc?

Post new topic

We are right around the corner for making the big move from California to Rome. We are a family of 3 including our 9 moth old! We could really use some advise on relocation companies verses shipping freight ourselves. We have opted not to ship big furniture etc, but there is still a lot to consider. Anyone have experience or recommendations?

So far we've organized Cargo shipping from Korea to Germany ourselves once.
That was alright regarding customs because I'm a German citizen.

We shipped some stuff from Kuwait this year to Hungary (via a relocation firm, but in the end it was the same difference). It also went Cargo and there was quite a bit of Paperwork involved and a fee for Customs, due to me not being a Hungarian citizen.

Make sure you know about any fees first. This was only about 250 Dollars, but in the end that was what all that stuff was worth.
We didn't know about the costs involved, because hubby's company didn't tell us and we didn't check.

It might be easier with a relocation company, because they (should) help you fill out the customs forms. But you might end up doing most of the work yourself. It will be more expensive and takes about the same time for shipping.

I would ask, is there really something you have to have with you or can't you buy it in Italy instead (and later ship it back home or simply resell it?)

Oh, one plus for the shipping company (relocation company), they pick up your stuff and deliver it.

I forgot that part :)

It made it worth it for us, due to not having a Truck around here and no decent rental car service.

Italy has a pretty good rental system.

In the end you might just best compare the prices and the time involved.
