My father was born in Debrecen, and lived there till he was fifteen years old. I have his birth certificate, but now I need to prove his permanence in Hungary between 1923 and 1938. Any suggestions?

There is quite a lot of discussion about these matters in the Naturalisation forum (search for it).  Many posters have been through similar experiences.

But as your Dad was born here, was Hungarian (I suppose), that makes you Hungarian too. But out of curiosity, why do you need to prove this permanence? He was a Hungarian citizen, right?

As I  understand it , Hungarians who left Hungary before 1929 lost their nacionality. That is why I have to stabblish  his permanence after that year.he was 5 or six years old by that time. Don’t know maybe census or school records could help. He arrived in may 1938 at Argentina. I don’t know where to begin to search these documents

I thought they actually got their nationality back.

Anyway, you should try clicking here and asking your question there. Lots of knowledge from the posters there.

I don't know exactly when and how the rules changed, but under the original Hungarian Citizenship Law, a Hungarian usually lost his Hungarian citizenship if he left Hungary for ten years or more, though some exceptions applied. I seem to recall the rule changed in 1929, but a persistent feature of Hungarian citizenship law is non-retroactivity.

I just looked here - HU Consulate in NYC - and it says:

Those, who left Hungary before September 1st, 1929 could loose their citizenship by living continuously abroad for a period exceeding 10 years. This 10 year period began after the expiry date in the person's last Hungarian passport. Therefore, in this case, a Hungarian official document (e.g. a passport, a written declaration made in a Hungarian Consulate, etc.) must be produced which would prove that the person kept his/her citizenship.....

From those who left Hungary before February 1st, 1949, a Hungarian document (any Hungarian identity document, school certificate, work certificate, diploma, etc.) proving that they lived in Hungary after September 1st, 1929 - especially for those who left in the 1930s, early 1940s - is required.

In some cases, the Acts of 1879 and 1939 entitled the Hungarian State to deprive Hungarians from their citizenship. .....

So if the OP has a passport valid for the period or some other document, perhaps say, a school record, indeed it should work.
