Need your guidance on a job position:

Offer is 1815 USD per month, shared cab from residence to work, company paid accomodation upto 1100 USD (including a servant), 4 round trips to India, medical, life and disability benefits.

I am a single male and would want to maintain a decent standard of living.

Please advise on living costs, especially, the following:

A Car

Thanks for all help.

Hi

I would say its on the low side!

Everything in Abuja is expensive, except fuel and jam!

For 1100$ to housing u will get a small single room.

Living cost is like Europe or higher.

Eating out u will spend about 30$ on a good meal, so that is not so expensive.

good luck

Hi there it is a good offer and u will be able to maintain the living standard here,,,,

Hi NewNewbie

you can definitely manage on USD 1815 a month, however you wont be able to have an extravagant lifestyle.

Having said that Abuja is very expensive

Cost of food is quite reasonable, fruit and vegetables are quite cheap. Meat and other poultry can be a little pricey but you just need to know where to go, a good market as oppose to shopping Malls, also go with someone who can help you barter the price down, maybe driver, or house help.

Gas (are you talking about cooking gas) about 3,500 Naira which should last about 1 month or longer

Internet is quite costly about 10,000-15,000 Naira for the month. or depending on what network you're on you can get about 500 Naira per day

Fuel is also quite costly however depending on how far you are from work and how often you use the car 10,000 Naira should last you in excess of a week.

hey NewNewbie theres a really good website always perfection relocations they actually specialise in people relocating to West Africa, ive used them myself to find out information if you fill out the form at the back they should be able to help no obligatory free consultation.

NewNewbie

Thank you Melissa and Sunny. Great guidance there and will actually help me break down costs further.

Melissa: Can't seem to find the form on the website which you indicated I should check. Could you please guide further?

Thank you all again for your help.

Regards,

Harish

1815 USD is a rediculous sum of money per month for an expatriate to be expected to live on in any part of Nigeria, especially with the list of items your employer requires you to pay for yourself. The minimum wage for London this year is 7.85GBP per hour, worked 200 hours a month yields 1570 GBP or $2612 USD. It is a criminal act for an employer to attempt to employ for less than this. Bear in mind this is income for an unskilled person with little or no career development/enhancement, and typically occupied by a person of limited education/training achievements or someone that needs a quick stop gap. i.e. a dead end job! Nigeria on the other hand is considered a global 'hardship location', and they tend to bring expats here for more than waiting tables, sweeping floors and washing dishes. The pay you are being offered should reflect this!

Trust me, I know a lot of people on minimum wage on london that are not taking home £1570 a month, more like £800-1,000 if you're lucky. it also depends how much if anything NewNewbie will be paying for accommodation out of his own back pocket, if it will be a substantial amount then it may not be worth it, if it will be little or nothing, then I cant see why he could live off $1815 a month. I have friends who live in Asokoro abuja on less a month.
