New PR Drivers License

Post new topic

frogrock

Hi gang,
I just went to DTOP to give them my change of address.  They gave me a new license It looks different from my original PR license, which was two years old.  I forgot to ask for the the one which is official identification for travel and the one I received has printed on it, NOT TO BE USED FOR IDENTIFICATION. So if you are going to renew, or get a license, remember to get the one that is good for ID. You have to pay $18 more.  By the way, if you did not know: now they take your photo at DTOP.

Thanks, Frogrock.  This is Brad's wife, Katie, and I'm heading into Guayama to get my driver's license this week.

Did you have the REAL ID license before?  The reason I ask is that when I was registering my car, I asked the lady about my driver's license, and she said that I could not get the REAL ID version because I was not born in the island (and Guayama is one of the locations that you can get one).  Doesn't sound right to me, but thought I'd search on here to see if anyone else had information about it.

I am not aware of that rule, you should be able to get a REAL ID card regardless, yes not all locations have them so check before anyone goes. I think the lady was mistaken. Have them show you the regulation.

Thanks, Rey, that's what I thought, but just wanted to check with others before getting in there.  I'll update when I'm done.

Be insistent that you want the real id, a lot of times they screw up and give you the wrong one cause the person is not paying attention. Bring SSN card and Birth certificate or passport with you.

You have to be a resident to get a Real Id driver's license. Bring a utility bill in your name, your old license, your birth certificate and social security card.
For non US born people bring either your green card or your naturalization certificate.
If you bring all the needed documents they have to issue you a Real ID driver's license.

Last time I tried that, their system was not yet able to verify birth certificates, outside of PR. Are they now updated? The individual at the Obras Publicas indicated, they had until October to become compliant.
