Cost of living in Canada - 2017

Hello,

Before moving to Canada, it is important to investigate the cost of living in the country.

As we did in 2015, we give you the opportunity to share your experience and tell us more about products and services average recorded prices in your town/city/area.

Don't hesitate to let us know if the cost of living in Canada has decreased or increased in the past few years.

Thanks to your help, would-be expatriates will have the opportunity to refine and better prepare their expatriation project.

Hi,

This is for the Hamilton, Ontario area.

In 2014-2015 i rented a small 1 bedroom condo apt for 1450$/month (Mississauga, close to square one shopping mall)

Food: bread: 2-3$ ; pasta: 2$;

In Hamilton a bus ride is 3$ when paid in cash, with a card it's 2.30$

Basic health care is provided by the government and is part of your taxes. Eg My son had emergency appendix surgery and we didn't have to pay anything. We have extra insurance via my employer, around 150$/month which covers partial reimbursment of prescription medication and dental.

Currently in Hamilton gas prices are around 1.05$/l

Electricity in winter for us is around 350$ for 2 months
Gas is around 100$/month

Internet+phone+basic TV around 100/month
Mobile I have 100$/month with share plan + 35$/month for additional line with own phone or 55$/month for additional line with phone on plan.

Gym I have a plan for 10$/month, but this is the cheapest plan in the area. Other gyms are around 50-70$/month

Depends on location. Even here in Halifax, NS. Downtown can run from 1500 - 2200

No train / tram / subway in Halifax NS. Just bus and ferry.  Bus and ferry fare cost 2.50 per trip for most basic rides.

People eat all kinds of things. You have a good mix of your suburban family and then you downtown family. It depends on mentality and thinking. Some more socially responsible individuals support local and thus only go to the farmers market etc. Others might just go for your usual super store or costco for cost savings which is located more in the burbs.

FREE. Canada healthcare is free. Except if you go for acupuncture or osteopath. That may be covered by your company's healthcare provider

I don't drive around much so its really insignificant. One thing because one lives in a small city, everything is nearby driving and there's less congestion on the road.

Depends on your home. I am fully on electric even for heat. Plus I don't have a heat pump. So I spend a fair bit. Furthermore energy price in NS is high.
