Phil, I've been looking into the same thing, I think the most important thing is that you have to show you've owned the car for at least 2 years. I haven't so using the Maltese dept of transport calculator it would cost me €700 in tax!
I was wondering if I could bring mine over, garage it then register it when I can show its been mine for the 2 years??
Everyone I spoke to in Malta last week said don't bother..I'll be interested in what others have to say..

If you are a resident of Malta then you have to register the vehicle immediately you arrive in Malta with the vehicle or when the vehicle arrives in Malta.

As a tourist you can use the vehicle for the three months.

You can only "Garage" a car in Malta if it has a Maltese registration plate.

To obtain the exemption you have to have owned the vehicle in your name for at least two years outside of Malta prior to starting the exemption application.

Its all explained here....

Foreign cars should be taxed through the roof. Cars are ruining this island.

All the cars on Malta are foreign and its not the cars that are ruining the Island but the Maltese !
