Buying a car in Haiti

Hi,

To be able to move in Haiti, a lot of expatriates think of buying a car, whether new or second-hand.

What are the formalities to buy a vehicle in Haiti: car registration, insurance, etc.?

What are the relevant authorities or organizations to contact?

How long does it take and what are the associated costs?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Kenjee

Any answer to the questions of this topic?

We've been told by a friend that a non-Haitian must establish 10 years of residency in Haiti before they can register a car in Haiti. Is this the case?

Hello, no you do not need 10 yrs of residency...
For a new car:
You will need a "Declaration definitive d'impot" which is a certificate from the tax authority saying you have paid taxes for the past fiscal year. This costs 25,000 gdes for a "forfaitaire" ,basically this is a base/minimum amount of tax to pay for a fiscal year without going through the real hassle of analyzing your income to assess a tax amount.

You can find someone to do this for a fee of 2,000-5,000 gdes.

For a used car:
After you have agreed on price and given a deposit to the person; literally the person selling it to you will go with you to OAVCT ( car registration and insurance office) you will both present your identification and both of you sign in from of a registration officer as witness.

After you have your registration you can pay the balance of what you owe to the person selling.
