Hello Uruguay Expats,

This is my first post to this group and I just wanted to say Hello.

FYI I will be moving to Uruguay (from Texas) this Sept/Oct and I am really looking forward to it as this has been my plan for a long time.

My early plan is to stay in Montevideo for a few months then move up country for a few more and later on travel the region. Occasionally I will travel back to USA and Canada to visit family and friends.

About me and my "to do list":

    ~ Retired engineer.
~ Canadian farm boy who has lived in USA since 1978.
~ Also spent 4 years in Switzerland (2010-2014) and traveled Europe extensively in my old sports car.
~ Hoping to "give back" and volunteer where I can be of help.
~ Take a Spanish course in Montevideo. Maybe even a cooking course.
~ Love to walk/hike, especially in the country.
~ Also love to dance and enjoy music.
~ Hoping to travel the region, even to the Antarctica and Ushuaia.
~ Hoping to get involved in a travel club,
~ Love good, simple food, wine and conversation.
~ I generally want stay busy doing good things, meet nice people, making friendships and enjoy the local culture and activities.

More later as I get more acquainted with this site and Uruguay.

Thank you and hope to hear back from you,

Best,

Ed

Welcome to Expat.com, EWL.

You are in for a big temperature change from Texas in September to Uruguay's cool off season.

Don't miss Colonia del Sacramento, the preserved former Portuguese fortress-town with parks, shorefront, a casino and tree-shaded cobblestone streets.  There is almost no pollution there.

If you are coming there from Montevideo or Buenos Aires, take the Buque Bus boat.

Hi Ed:
It's nice to see that people plan their move to Montevideo (or other parts in Uruguay.) I am planning to do the same, so far have to continue working THREE more years in the USA. I was to Montevideo a few times and this is the place where I would want to retire.
I lived in NYC for 20 years, and last 8 years I've been living in Los Angeles.
I hope you will communicate with both expat groups in Montevideo and I wish you good luck with your plans. I will be in Montevideo beginning of December again (communicating with real estate folks) and I will meet with the two groups again. They are of a huge help and give you a priceless practical advice.
Good luck,
Galina
