Hi all

Just arrived and have been dropped off in my compound (las Dunas - no idea where it is though!)

Work due to start on Sunday but wondering about the best way to meet people and get doing things?

Hi Jon,

I must say you landed at the wrong time, only last night we were covered with a huge sandstorm! hope you are surviving all the dust around!

Here is one place to get to meet people, perhaps if you can mention your hobbies then someone might be recommend to you to a group or something.

Thanks for the response, yes waking up to everything covered in sand was an interesting "hello"

Good point re hobbies, given the weather keen to be outdoors, used to live in the Emirates and did a lot of camping, walking in the mountains and so on (so if people do that and/or go out into the desert would be all good - although no idea how safe that is here?)

But generally like socialising and happy to sit next to a pool chatting (would normally say with a beer......) be out and about. Like exploring around new areas I live in etc.

Moving for me was as much about change as anything else so willing and keen to give anything (well most things) a go.

As an Aramco employee I understand they have a lot of facilities (although due to space I am not in one of their compounds) but keen to know as wide a group as poss and assume (hopefully correctly!) that meeting and doing stuff with other people at Aramco will be easy enough but some effort required to meet a wider group.

Cheers,

Jon

Hi Jon,

hope you are settling in well! how are your days at work so far? i know its a little bit early for you to tell, like you said, you will find many expats within Aramco and you hopefully you will have plenty of socializing to do with them and eventually meet more people!

Camping in the desert is an option here as well, wither you want to take your own setup or just rent one, but do it fast before the heat gets unbearable! and its pretty safe by the way :)

There are few places to explore around here, diving trips, beaches and loads of desert! but don't expect it to match anything you used to do in the Emirates  :D

Thanks for responding again 😀

Getting there slowly, met a few people on the work bus, have got in touch with the khobar HHH (camping weekend coming up 😀) Found a squash partner in my compound.

Will join touch rugby at Dhahran Aramco camp so settling in slowly (basically throwing myself into everything head first)

But still keen on meeting as many various people as possible so will keep on being keen until I finally run out of steam

Diving is not a bad idea and something I may also look into, but a fair amount of commitment there so may wait a while for that

and you have arranged all this within the first week itself! haha  , i am sure you will never face a dull moment.

There is weekend walk event happening on 16 April, you might find that to your liking (https://www.couchsurfing.com/events/wee … rce=digest)

yeah, diving does require a bit of commitment (and investment) at first before things become manageable!  :)

speaking of camping, here is another one!

Also from JHB, not living in a compound and so far really thought we are the only lost souls here..... :D

We mountain bike with Fat Bikes in the desert on weekends and tried to cast a line or two a few kilometres outside Khobar near Hofuf.

Good luck and enjoy your new adventure.
