Youtube is not banned. Only porn and religiously defamatory material is.

Youtube is an important site it is used for education and giving lectures too, it is a part of people's lives and on a daily basis. Almost everyday I enter Youtube.
What is your job will be in Riyadh?

Can you post links to those websites?  YouTube has never been blocked here, ever.

that's BS

The news is correct, but YouTube was not blocked except a few videos that were anti-Islamic. Google blocks content at country level based on respective countries.

Dear peyton evans,

Get a VPN that costs very cheap and you have access to anything you want in internet.

Why even get a VPN lol :D

It's easy , takes seconds to do , just "HIDE IP" :)

lol. funny question.  expat-blog dot com is being blocked in most compounds, also in villas, and apartments and all roads. :-)

just buy a wireless broadband subscription.

Try to have onspeed portal.onspeed.com/?rf=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.onspeed.com%2Findex.php
in your computer or instal VPN apps in your iPad. Then everything will work just normal.

It's not banned/blocked. However some access might be restricted depending on the content.

Compounds don't have the capability to block anything. They're still connected to Saudi servers so you will connect to anything that is available to the general public. However, internet is censored to keep it "PG" rated. Obviously porn is blocked. But they also block "questionable" sites which, while not containing nudity, do have adult articles or content. One particular comedy site that I've read for years is blocked and it contains absolutely no nudity. Additionally if you use Skype like a lot of expats they (STC and Mobily) have recently started what's called "Throttling" the bandwidth. Your Skype connection will suck, and if its an important call you will wind up using your cell minutes which is exactly what they want you to do. And forget about video calls. Whats App isn't free here either you have to pay for it. I strongly recommend subscribing to a VPN service and install on all your gadgets BEFORE you get here. Get a 4G router (signals are usually excellent anywhere in Riyadh) and with a VPN you can stream/talk/surf whatever with no problems.

Use a different proxy , work done  :offtopic:

Hello peyton ,

I got what you mean, even the post you shared for this article is 2 years ago. Youtube is not blocked in Saudi Arabia just some categories like porno  and other sites which listed in a blocked category.
In compounds if you are using the internal network it could be blocked during their policies or IT department as youtube get high internet traffic that will affect to other subscribers ( if they had 200 subscribers and 50 of them is on youtube streaming the internet connection will be very solw ), IT team can block some sites using ISA servers, TMG and other network staff, if so you can buy your own internet subscription with a wireless device and enjoy your time :)

Great Idea above, its very simple :) vpn and smartdns are best way to access geo restricted content banned via country ip
i would suggest u VPN services like Purevpn, Hidemyass and SmartDNS services like unblock.com (They are exceptionally well for fast stream i think smartdns works well, i myself use Unblock.

Nothing is blocked or banned technically - if you use a proper VPN and actually set it up properly (i.e. static routes and different DNS servers) you'll be fine. I've never come across anything on uTube that's banned but then I don't have a login for questionable content.

Get a set of VPN accounts and you'll be fine. If you plan on living on a compound I'd suggest get a telco 4G router and avoid the compound raping you for 300 or so Riyals a month when an STC unlimited 4G box is 100 or a supposedly unlimited mobily one is the same.

If anything is looking blocked through a VPN it's probably the service provider (Yes thank you UK national lottery for figuring out all the StrongVPN server IP addresses)  :P
