Hi all, I have a question and I'm not sure where it can be posted. I am a US citizen and my wife is a Paraguayan. She has her legal residency in the US and we got her "permission" to be out of the country for 2 years while we were here in Paraguay taking care of her father. Her 2 years is about to expire and we can't leave just yet. Can she get an extension at the embassy in Asuncion? Also, her residency card expires next year. If she decides to try and get her US citizenship, can that be done here in Paraguay? If she just wants to renew her residency, can that be done in Asuncion?
Any replies would be helpful, thank you
She can get an extension (a very short one at that) at the embassy in Asuncion. US Citizenship is not give to people that are not in the United States. This means she will need to return to the US to apply. One thing to note though - it is unlikely she will qualify if she has been out of the country that long. And you may need to provide documentation to prove it is essential she remain outside the US any longer.

Be very careful. Reentry permit cannot be extended. If permit expires while overseas, she may be considered as abandon her US residency and her green card becomes invalid. Best solution is to take a trip back to the US before reentry permit expires and apply for a new one.
If you wife has a permanent residency card (green card) and is out of the country for already APPROVED extended period, it can extended via. the local consulate or embassy. I am assuming you do not have a permit. (re-entry permits do not exist with green card holders.) Given it has been two years already, you may have difficulty in Paraguay justifying it without documentation. The best option usually to return to the United States.
I would call or e-mail the Embassy and ask for Citizen Services. They can tell you the best route.

The info provided above by usmc_mv is inaccurate. One last point, it is highly inadvisable to apply for returning resident visa as it is rarely granted. Details here:
http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants … .html#docs
daxbr - I did not read anywhere about renewing a visa or "permit." I read about permission which is entered into the USCIS - SAVE *AND* CBP TECS.
rschulenberg, can you please clarify if you a referring to renewing your wife's visa? Or referring to obtaining an extension of your wife's already authorized absence from the United States? If you are asking for only permission and not a visa, that permission is noted in the USCIS SAVE/CBP TECS (system at the PoE) and does not require a new visa. If you are referring to a visa that is an entirely different story.
Thank you.
