Hi all,

How much would a couple need to earn per month in order to live in a 1-bed house in Auckland, Christchurch or Wellington? We don't live frugally per se, but are not big spenders -probably middle-of-the-road, really.

Thanks,

Sarah

This will give you an idea of how much you will have to earn to live in Auckland, Christchurch or Wellington.
Rents are expensive.

Hi Sarah

NZ housing and living expenses are relatively high - especially in Auckland. Most rentals are listed on trademe.co.nz. After you find something interesting in your price range, click on the street view tab above the map at the bottom of the page, or search for the street or address in Google Earth. That should give you a rough idea what the neighborhood looks like.

Generally speaking, a very small house in an acceptable area within 45 minutes commuting distance in Auckland will cost at least $400/week, but don't be surprised if you are forced to spend $500 or more. Also, as a new immigrant, you will be at a significant disadvantage competing for the affordable, desirable rentals. Rental hunting is a full-contact sport in Auckland.

Wellington is slightly more affordable and there is a functional light rail system. There you can probably find something in the $350-450 range. Christchurch is still recovering after the earthquakes, and rental property prices have dramatically increased in the aftermath.

For a nice affordable lifestyle, you could move to Invercargill. :)

Typical expenses:
Food budget - 2 adults, $600+/month (low end), more if you dine out
Telephone - $40+/month
Sky TV or cable - $50+/month
Internet - $50+/month
Mobile plans - $30+/month and up
Used auto - $7-8k+ and up for something reliable
On road costs (inspections (WOF), registration) - $350+/year
Fuel - ranges from $2.00-2.25 per litre
Train pass (Wellington) - depends how far away you live - $100-250/month/person
Car insurance - (not mandatory) - $500+/year
Health insurance - not mandatory - $50+/month for basic cover,  up to $150+ for complete cover per person

Estimated, minimum household income for a single family residence, upper lower class lifestyle: $70k/year, no savings.
