We are thinking of either fetching a van over, owned by my partner for over 2 years or buying an automatic estate here so we could both drive it, he needs a van for work and I can only drive an auto, does anyone know how much either option costs? It seems very complicated and although I've looked at threads I can't seem to find how much either thing is. Or are we better of just buying there even though it's more expensive.

There is nothing complicated about it you just bring a vehicle in, fill in the form pay your import tax and its done!
You have the link to find out how much the import tax is but for the van that your partner has owned for more than two years then you can apply for tax exemption. You have to prove that it has been owned by him (not a company) for more than two years before being brought into Malta.
All you have to do is decide if driving it down and registering it is worth it ?
Cars and vans on the island are not cheep but tend to be low mileage and you don't have the registration tax but road tax is expensive (unless registered in Malta before 1999, I think), insurance is about the same.

The other thing to remember is that if you import the van tax exempt you still have to pay the import tax when you come to sell/exchange or scrap the vehicle.

a temporary exemption then Terry....no escaping taxes and death.

Dying is like getting audited by the tax man--something that only happens to other people ... until it happens to you!

There are more people dead than alive and that figure is growing!

Toon

are you sure?
